Description

This book is a play written by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, first published in 1975. It is based on a real event that took place in Nigeria during British colonial rule and explores the clash of cultures between Yoruba tradition and colonial intervention. The story centers on a Yoruba chief, whose ritual suicide is a sacred duty following the death of his king, and the British District Officer who tries to prevent it, leading to a tragic confrontation.

The play is considered a masterpiece of world literature, examining complex themes of honor, duty, tradition, and the devastating impact of cultural misunderstandings.
